Invisibok: the Steenbok

If you look carefully, you will see a steenbok standing within the scrub vegetation. It blends so well with the grass and shrubbery, it is almost the invisible bok. One of the smallest African antelope. The steenbok is unusual in that they are pair-living (monogamous); a territorial adult male and female occupy a patch of grassland. Their response to disturbance is usually simply to lie down in the grass. This works well, but means they scare the life out of me when walking in the savannah, as they do not bolt until you are very close! Steenbok or steinbuck (Raphicerus campestris).

Location: Northern Cape, South Africa
