Amorphophallus titanum - the corpse flower
New Reekie with kids
Almost every visitor had a camera or camera phone to capture an image of the briefly spectacular and smelly Amorphophallus titanum (titan arum, corpse flower). People of all ages came to marvel at the botanical spectacle that was New Reekie. It was great to see so many kids who looked like dwarfs alongside the giant plant. The first flowering of this plant in Scotland in history. When will we see (and smell) it again? This image show the square section cut out of the base of the spathe in order to collect pollen for freeze-storage and subsequent distribution to pollinate titan arum in other Botanic Gardens around the world.
